Michelle Obama once said ‘Lead by example with hope, never fear’ and I can’t agree more. Today we’re going to discuss leadership, a topic I’m very passionate about. How can you become the dream leader of your business and captain of the industry? Dear reader, let me be your guide…

Maybe you’re thinking that you don’t have a team. But, let me ask you this: do you have an accountant or virtual assistant? Or a video editor? Yes? Then you got yourself a team! As soon as you start working with people, you’re a team leader. It’s important that you step into a leadership role and create a team culture.
Lead the way (never instruct!)
The right type of leadership is crucial for an excellent working business. And in my opinion, you do that by simply leading the way and definitely not by instructing your team.
I once had this boss (yup a boss, not a leader) who was completely micromanaging me. I have no problem with being told what I need to do, but I don’t like it when they tell me HOW I should do something.
If you’re leading the way, just give some focus points and make clear what you need from your team.
Trust the outcome
Part of being a great leader is providing a safe working environment. This atmosphere is created by trusting your team and showing them you genuinely do. Don’t instruct and (obsessively) control them and their work. Just trust the progress and the outcome. I know this is easier said than done. I work a lot with business owners and therefore know from experience that many of them are slightly afraid of letting go of certain tasks.
Build a culture
Another aspect of being a great leader, is establishing a strong culture within the business. One that resonates with everyone who works for the company. Think of what kind of business you want to have. What kind of people do you need for this to succeed? What is the image you want to carry towards your industry and clients? When offering a response to these questions, it all starts with your golden rules as a leader. HOW do YOU see it?

Make mistakes, but just once
As a leader of a team, it is okay to make mistakes. We’re only human, right? It’s just important that you are honest about it and avoid making them a second time. A humble leader is what companies need, so own your mistakes.

What is YOUR duty?
This is the second part I want to discuss today. And it may be a difficult one.
Firstly, it is vital to understand your industry and even the world in general. What do you not like in your industry and this world? What do you want to change about it? For instance, I don’t like how female entrepreneurs are always being set aside. There was this one Dutch entrepreneur who was stating that owning a webshop isn’t equal to having a business. But, *surprise surprise* it is! My duty in this world? Showing women that they’re able to create a successful business themselves. Whether it is a small business or freelance business, women are also capable of having that BIG BUSINESS!
Just a little, but very important question in between: WHO RUN THE WORLD? G… *Wiiiiink*

What message do you bring?
When you know what impact you want to make, think about how you’re going to do it. What message are you going to shout out loud? Try different messages every other day and see how people react to them. And with doing so, keep in mind that you don’t have to be afraid of making money while doing this.
One last important message I want to share with you! Once you become more of an authority, people will see you as the leader you are! Step into that leadership role, woman. Let’s keep this inspiring quote of Lady Gaga in mind. “You have to be unique and different and shine in your own way.” Preach, Gaga! Think abundantly, there is room for everyone. You do you and you’ll succeed!
