#38 The 7 things we can still learn from… the Spice Girls

Melanie C – business lessons from the spice Girls

Being obsessed with the Spice Girls at the age of 10 really had its perks…

I gained confidence, started to see I could do whatever I want and learned I don’t need a man to make me happy.

But as a 10-year old you have no idea what goes on behind Girl Power, Zig-a-zig-ah and Hai-Si-Ja.

Last week I read the first autobiography from Melanie C.

She talks about:

– her upbringing in a working-class family

– how the Spice Girls knew that girl bands would be the next best thing (the industry didn’t believe them)

– her mental health and support system

– how the Spice Girls evolved from Girl Power to LGBTQ+ messaging

– the toll of fame

As I am still a bit obsessed with the Spice Girls and love helping entrepreneurs build the business of their dreams, I am combining the 2 in this week’s podcast:

‘Business Lessons from the Spice Girls’

  1. I tell you what I want, what I really, really want

The industry, if you believe it, do it. Do not let your beliefs be blocked by others. The Spice Girls heard so many people from the industry say that nobody is waiting for a girlband.

  1. When you’re feeling sad and low, we will take you where you gotta go

Empower others, they went from girl power to now lgbtq+ power.

Helping others with your message is so important in your one-person business.

I’m talking about this in my signature big business framework all the time.

I can not believe no other business coach talks about this.

  1. Stop right now, thank you very much

Fire your manager or your team member if they’re not helping you.

There’s so many people working with other who do not support them, stop that.

I loved my clients, but I’m loving it even more that I can record a podcast about the Spice Girls if I want to, step into your power and inner being.

  1. Too much of something, is bad enough

Mental health and support system.

Melanie clearly needed help, she talked about how artists are often people who want to have a great stage experience, but she’s also talking about how fame is so much more than that.

She wishes she could turn that around.

Being very clear and understanding very well how to create the business and life of your dreams is so important.

  1. I’m giving you everything

Melanie C mentions in her book that they started the other way around; promotion shoots, interviews etc instead of just trying to play live and building from there.

I remember thinking about how successful they were and realized very soon that their Spice millions were burned very soon too.

In this you’ll need a profitable business model and it’s just as easy as is there more money coming in than going out. A scalable business model helps being very profitable in times when you’re sick, or taking some time of in a sabbatical or having a baby

  1. Who do you think you are

Know when to say no, when Geri left the Spice Girls, the other girls wanted to continue, but Melanie C really needed to spend time and attention to her mental and physical health. She had some solo projects going on and she just didn’t have the head space. Knowing to say no, daring to go all in on your pivot is so key.

There’s so many people I know who are afraid of letting go and yes you should have a strategic plan to fill the gaps, (like money), but most of the time you need to push your mind into saying: it’s time for the next step.

  1. Now we got the flavour, the bad behaviour

It doesn’t matter where you’re coming from, as long as you have the drive to change something, to be successful. Melanie mentions one of the first band members Michelle, who didn’t want it. When Emma joined last, the band was complete, they were gonna take on the world, all 5 wanted to become successful, they had a very strong drive and understanding.

You need to know this too. Any business mentor: Tony Robbins, Gary Vee, anyone tells you this and i’m telling you too: you really have to want it to reach it. And enjoy the process, because it’s not gonna be easy. Spice Girls look like overnight success but they worked 2 years for a very measly salary. Do not believe anyone who tells you that there are quick hacks and tricks, they aren’t.

You will learn: what to sell, how to sell it during Black Friday, so you’ll have some extra support on this. Priced at only 34 euro (that’s less than a spice girls cd would have costed ;-).

Big business

Do you want to take charge of your (freelance) business and be in control of your revenue, clients and your offer?

You are in control of your business.

I’ve created a form in which we can see if you are going to be a fit for one of my programs. Filling this out won’t mean you have to buy, this is just seeing if we can work together.
